Continuous-level sensors provide a continuous reading of levels from minimum to maximum. In other words, they provide an analog signal (0-10 volts dc, or 4-20 mA). These sensors are generally more expensive as they must provide a continuous signal. Several types of sensor elements may be used to provide a continuous signal. These include the R.F. admittance (capacitance) type, the sonic type, conductive type, sounding type that uses a reel and tape, and the differential pressure sensor that can be used to determine the height of a liquid column. If the weight of a substance is known, a gales-type weighing sensor can be used to measure the total volume of the material being measured.
