Analog and Digital Signals

Another important and necessary conversion of signals is the conversion of analog signals to digital formats and the conversion of digital signals to analog formats. These signal conversions have become important in the last ten years because of the large increase in digital electronic circuits and devices. Digital signals are generally classified by the number of bits that are used. e.g., if the signal uses 12 bits, it converts to the binary number 4096 so values from 0-4095 can be used; if 16-bit signals are used, it converts to the binary number 65566, so values from 0-65565 can be displayed. If the 16-bit number requires a+/- sign, one of the bit locations is used as the sign bit, so the numbers 0 to +32767 and 0 to -32766 are represented with the remaining 15 bits.
