Example concrete block wall constructions for mechanical spaces, in order of increasing sound isolation effectiveness, are shown below. The more massive a construction, the greater its resistance to airborne sound. Avoid light weight hollow concrete block, gypsum board, and other constructions which have poor transmission loss performance at low frequencies.

Single-Layer Masonry Walls vs. Single-Layer Masonry Wall with Resiliently Supported Skin vs. Double-Layer Masonry Wall; Sound-Isolating Effectiveness

Note: The heavyweight concrete block wall constructions shown above have mortar- or sand-filled cells. The installation of the mortar or sand should be frequently verified as construction progresses. Surface mount all mechanical and electrical services so the block wall will not be penetrated.
