A traditional on-off control is used to control the level of water in the sump. This type of control can turn the output (final control element) on or off. In some cases the level where the pump is turned on and off is so close that the motor will begin to cycle on and off rapidly. This action is called short cycling and it can be harmful to the pump. The difference between the point where the pump is turned on and where the pump is turned off is called the differential gap and the sump pump system can be modified to allow the differential gap to be fully adjustable.
